Tomboy on Windows
Recently the Tomboy Notes has been released for windows. This is great news, as my current work build is windows and I have a shed load of notes stuck on my linux box at home.
Installing.
I found this didn’t work 1st time, so these are the steps.
- Install GTK# for Windows from medsphere.org/projects/gtksharp, I used this SDK .msi
- Reboot
- Now download this, and use it to replace (over-write) C:\Program Files\Medsphere\Gtk# SDK\etc\gtk-2.0\gdk-pixbuf.loaders
- Open the new gdk-pixbuf.loaders, find “
Gtk# Runtime” & replace with “Gtk# SDK“ - Install Tomboy
You should now be able to run tomboy… it appears in your system tray.
Importing Notes.
If like me you have a linux box with a load of notes you want to read, then follow these steps.
On your linux box:
- cd into $HOME/.tomboy
- copy all .note files
Transfer the .note files to your windows box.
On your Windows box:
- Exit tomboy
- cd into C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\tomboy
- paste all your .note files
Start Tomboy & Enjoy!

Just so you know, we’ve been keeping install instructions on our wiki here:
http://live.gnome.org/Tomboy/Installing/Windows
That’s linked from the download page, now. The instructions are quite similar to yours, but I’m going to add the info about copying over notes. Feel free to edit the wiki if you have anything to add.
And thanks for getting the word out about our Windows preview releases!
Hi Sandy,
Thanks for the feedback, at least now I know there were some proper install instructions! Google couldn’t find them and I didn’t see any obvious “readme” type links on the project or live pages:(
..it doesn’t matter, this post and your comment will help others in the future; keep up the good work, I love tomboy !
Yeah, we have some work to do to make this more discoverable before the 0.14.0 stable release! Hopefully the gtk-sharp installers will be fixed by then, too.
Is there anything more required to transfer linux tomboy notes to windows?
I copied the note files to the location of the note files on Windows, but they are not appearing. I verified that the xml format is the same.. It just doesn’t appear to scan the directory for files. The manifest.xml doesn’t appear to have index data, but it must be somewhere, right?
r
I just noticed a typo in my post…
Did you copy to the right place?
Also, you have to restart Tomboy when you manually make changes to the note directory.
Don’t worry about manifest.xml, that file is used internally for some synchronization features, and does not do what you think it does.
