Gnome / Nautilus going round in circles

I wonder if anyone else finds this a bit irritating…

This new “spatial” user interface presents just one window for each folder, and remembers their location and size.

Gnome 2.6 Release Notes

Now…

Nautilus features a number of user interface changes including a new split view mode and is now set to browser mode by default, replacing spatial mode.

Gnome 2.30 Release Notes

Is this progression or development in circles?

Evolution in Gnome 2.26

I’ve just noticed this in the Gnome 2.26 Release Notes

2.3. Evolution Evolves its Migration from Windows

GNOME’s e-mail and groupware suite, Evolution, has gained two important features for helping users who are migrating to GNOME from Microsoft Windows environments.

First is the ability to import Microsoft Outlook Personal Folders (PST files) directly in Evolution. E-mail, contacts, appointments, tasks and journal entries are supported. Previously, the files had to be imported via a third-party utility, such as Thunderbird on Windows.

Second is support for Microsoft Exchange’s MAPI protocol. This is the protocol that Microsoft Outlook uses to communicate with Exchange. Previously, Evolution only supported Exchange’s SOAP protocol, which is not available on all Exchange servers. This support significantly improves Evolution’s integration with Exchange servers.

All I can say is WOW!

Linux users will have known that MAPI support into gnome has been on the cards for a while, but .pst access is just brilliant!!

Fedora 7: Theming the Gnome Screensaver Lock Dialogue

Fedora 7 Flying High Locked Theme

I stumbled across this the other day, I’ve no idea why the fedora team would go to the effort of making a really nice theme for the lock dialogue for gnome screen saver then leave it “disabled by default”. After a quick google I found the ubuntu guys have been up to something similar, so here a quick how to enable the fedora art work on the gnome-screensaver lock screen.

To enable paste this into a terminal (NOT root, as your normal user).

gconftool-2 -s --type=string /apps/gnome-screensaver/lock_dialog_theme system

To switch it back:

gconftool-2 -s --type=string /apps/gnome-screensaver/lock_dialog_theme default

The only “downer” is that your avatar isn’t shown, but for my work laptop I prefer this theme, much cooler fedora advocate when I’m not at my desk ;)

Crash Pin Stripes ! (EDIT!)

EDIT: Also avilable here on art.gnome.org

Look at this, dry for ages, and 2 posts in a day!

Actually this happened a couple of days ago, my laptop crashed, and this black & stripy screen is what I got, I thought it’d make a cool gnome art ;-)

Making good use of the time she crashed.

Gnome Wallpaper – Blue & Simple

It’s been a while since I’ve done some art, so this eve’ I felt like a dabble, this is what I came up with…

Not too much, not too little.

Not too much, not too little.

I like gradients, blue and was aiming for something simple. A copy can be downloaded from gnome look here. I don’t suppose it’s good enough for art.gnome so I won’t bother ;)

Frosty Grass On Video (Gnome XGL)

Tiz cold in here!

Tiz cold in here!

Frosy Grass is by far my most successful piece of gnome art; it’s got my best rating in art.gnome.org, and has a massive 3209 downloads (art.gnome = 2425 gnome look = 784).

Today, I just found something really cool, Frosty Grass is in a novel presentation video !!!!!!
Take a look at http://www.linuxedge.org/?q=node/58 it’s a demonstration of new rendering for gnome; fancy transparent windows, flipping desktops, all that cool stuff. As you’ll notice in the 1st few seconds of the video my art work is in the folder that gets moved, stretched and faded in the presentation !

As you can tell I’m over the moon about this, I think It’s well cool, I just wish I’d found it earlier :-D

Gnome Blogger (Wallpaper)

Inspiration hit me last night, how about using the gnome foot – which is a ‘G’ – as the ‘g’ in blog or blogger.

So here we have it… Gnome Blogger :)

The back grounds are transparent so you can mess with the colours, I’ve done a light and a dark one depending on your taste !

It looks like gallery2 has buggered up the screen shots :( , so you can see some at art.gnome or gnome-look:

Simple Desktop Wallpaper

I thought it was time to clean up my desktop, you know had the usual mess of temporary files & shotcuts ! So to complement my cleaner desktop I thought I’d make a new gnome wallpaper.

My first draft was very plain, but then I remember this bottle top lid, I think it’s just the right touch.

Simple Gnome Gnome Beer on a Simple Background

Hope you like them :D

New GnomeArt: Anyone for Frosty Grass ?

So I’m having a small issue posting, I’ve been in casualty due to my right eye not working properly. (More about this when I can see)

This picture has been on the camera for a week or two, but the recent additions to art.gnome have inspired me to crop this up to a nice shot. ;)

New Gallery & New GnomeArt

I’ve been meaning to finish this for a long time now, & I’ve finally finished integrating Gallery2 into my website. The pics section has a direct integration thanks to wpg2.

To celebrate I’ve thrown together a new wallpaper, it’s a sunset at southsea Pier, taken recently. Sunset pictures always make desktops, and this one has some subtle life in it too ;)

Yummy Gnome Sunsetness!

I’ve released it too on gnome look.
