Frosty Grass On Video (Gnome XGL)

Tiz cold in here!

Tiz cold in here!

Frosy Grass is by far my most successful piece of gnome art; it’s got my best rating in art.gnome.org, and has a massive 3209 downloads (art.gnome = 2425 gnome look = 784).

Today, I just found something really cool, Frosty Grass is in a novel presentation video !!!!!!
Take a look at http://www.linuxedge.org/?q=node/58 it’s a demonstration of new rendering for gnome; fancy transparent windows, flipping desktops, all that cool stuff. As you’ll notice in the 1st few seconds of the video my art work is in the folder that gets moved, stretched and faded in the presentation !

As you can tell I’m over the moon about this, I think It’s well cool, I just wish I’d found it earlier :-D

SiteAdvisor – Another Firefox Security Plugin

I found this over the weekend….

Spyware, Adware, Spam, Phishing, Viruses, Identity Theft Protection | SiteAdvisor
SiteAdvisor helps protect you from all kinds of Web-based security threats including spyware, adware, spam, viruses, browser-based attacks, phishing, online fraud and identity theft.

It seems cool, a different approach the the anit-phishing type stuff. Basically you get a simple security report about the sites you visit. The report comes in the flavour of a traffic light in your browser toolbar, green is safe – red is not. Another nice touch is the traffic light is added to our google results, so before you even click on a site you can determine how ‘hostile’ the webmaster may be.

The software is currently in beta, so it’s a temporary free offering, hopefully it’s be a free for personal use thing :D

Time for a change.

I now have a new site look and feel :D

It’s been a little while in the making, but I thought, nearly 1yr of uptime was grounds for a new site theme. I wanted something clean, simple, and different from the last one; hopefully it’s nice, readable and easy on the eye.

If you’ve been playing with the theme switcher you’ll need to delete your cookies ;)

Gnome Blogger (Wallpaper)

Inspiration hit me last night, how about using the gnome foot – which is a ‘G’ – as the ‘g’ in blog or blogger.

So here we have it… Gnome Blogger :)

The back grounds are transparent so you can mess with the colours, I’ve done a light and a dark one depending on your taste !

It looks like gallery2 has buggered up the screen shots :( , so you can see some at art.gnome or gnome-look:

A & Z list sheep ?

I was reading schoble’s blog about blogcode , and in it he talks about using a made up word to f*ck with the blogging system, load of people have done it, so I thought I’d join the flock….

Nokia launching net call handsets

This article from yesterday cannot go unmentioned….

BBC NEWS | Business | Nokia launching net call handsets
Nokia is introducing new mobile phone handsets that will enable users to make calls over the Internet.

Nokia putting VIOP on a mobile phone marks a significant shift on communication & the Internet. Skype were the 1st people to try and offer consumers or “Joe public” voip phones for home use, it’s not that the technology is new, cisco & avaya have been offering businesses the technology for years, it’s just that it wasn’t quite right for the market at large.

Where skype are failing, nokia will succeed, why ? Because people already own, buy and are familiar with the product “Joe public” can walk into any CarPhoneWareHouse and buy a mobile phone & if the new model comes with free* Internet phone calls then of course they’ll pick it.

So what does that mean to us, the professionals who work in networking and security ? Well networking will change, specifically wireless, more people will need access to WI-FI lans, so the bandwidth will need to increase, security of these lans will change, laptops and pdas will need authentication, but phone access will need to be simple. Security as a whole will change, it’s the windows syndrome again, people buy windows for home PC’s because that’s what they’re used to at work, and when they are at work they choose windows solutions because that’s what they have the most exposure to, since in their home pc’s run windows :D … sorry where was I…. yes, People will start to have VOIP on their mobile phones, so they’ll look at VOIP for their business solutions; and users will see VOIP IP PHONE printed on their desk phone, so when offered voip on their mobile they’ll consider buying it.

The shift to VOIP effects security, because now a single data network is responsible for the full communication of a business; what if their local call manager connects to an external provider, now their firewall is responsible for passing e-mail and voice communications (not to mention any other data)… all of a sudden the network infrastructure and the security implementation is solely responsible for comm’s where as before we all had the security blanket of if the Internet/e-mail/network fails we can all pick up the phone !

I guess this means the future is going to be bright, more wireless bandwidth for more VOIP communications running on a single network infrastructure with increased security awareness is a significant evolution, and hey, with the whole web2.0 thing pushing the hype along nicely we should all hopefully be in jobs for the next few years ;)

* All free’s come with conditions, so it probably won’t actually be free, but you know the marketing will say it is.

Cookie Path Plugin For WordPress 2.0 (root Cookie)

UPDATE: This Plugin has been updated, the below links to the new file, but please comment on the new post, thanks.

I’ve been busy this AM, my site is a little bit integrated with WordPress, basically I call the header and footer from WP so that my custom code changes themes when WordPress does :)

I want to take it further and use the authentication cookie, so that my code recognizes me when I log in (in the same way WordPress does). In order for linickx.com to see the cookie set by linickx.com/blog, I need to change the COOKIEPATH. The change is actually quite simple, in fact the “set cookie” function is a pluggable one :D

The function / plugin I’ve written is really simple, all I’ve done is change the PATH to be / (root) that way linickx.com or linickx.com/blah can reference the cookie, and because it’s set to / the plugin can be used on any site !

To install:

  • Save root-cookie.txt in your plugins directory as root-cookie.php (Right Click – Save As)
  • From the Plugin Manager in the Dashboard, “Activate” the plugin
  • Log out, and log in again
  • Done

Now your cookie can be referenced from any custom code you may have written outside of your WordPress install directory !

Blogger Web Comments for Firefox

I’ve been putting off upgrading to firefox 1.5 for ages, but my curiosity for this extension finally got the better of me ! :D

Blogger Web Comments for Firefox
Blogger Web Comments for Firefox is an extension that makes it easy to see what bloggers are saying about a page you’re viewing in firefox

I know this isn’t exactly new news , so there are lots of places to find out about it ! I’ve been playing with it a little today, and still am undecided on whether it’s cool or annoying.

Coolness: Visiting sites, and seeing what people say about them gives a good insight into the sites audience, and being able to leave comments on a site that doesn’t support them is also kind-a-cool… where it fall down is there is no default “this post is about this page” on your blogspot blog, so you have to remember to put one in yourself :(

Annoying: It’s another “pop up”, and people are posting comments about google.com or mail.yahoo.com and I’m thinking, why ? what do I care ? and how is this relevant, there is no intelligent comment that can be made about mail.yahoo’s log in page ! I can think of two improvements I’m going to suggest

  1. Filterable: Be able to disable comments for certain sites
  2. A side bar: pop ups are distracting, but a side bar (maybe with auto hide) would be less annoying (may be a little more intrusive) and would allow multiple comments to be seen at any one time !

You can check out what I’ve said about websites on my blogger account. I’ve not used it for anything else much, so It’ll be interesting to see if I use it now !

CoComment Plugin for WordPress……

My health isn’t too great at the moment, so I’m a little behind the times :(

I just found this CoComment Plugin for WordPress and thought it was worth a plug ! I like CoComment because I really think it’s going to make people life easier, personally I’ve started commenting on blogs; I never really did before because I couldn’t be bothered to find out what was said after I left, but now I get the conversation delivered as an RSS feed !!!!!!!!!

So to spread the word you’ll find a co-comment link at the bottom of my posts, get the plugin and spread the word yourself !

My 1st AJAX…

A simple ajax menu thing

Calcylator isn’t a big web 2.0 application, but there are area’s where it’ll fit quite nicely with some of the new delivery methods.

AJAX is a technology that differentiates traditional websites with 2.0 ones; the basic idea is that pages are delivered to the user with less page refreshes (thus less bandwidth, in turn quicker !). A good example of a 2.0 site vs a traditional one is maps.google.co.uk vs ebay.co.uk. With ebay you’ll notice every time you update something the page refreshes & the URL changes. If you look at maps.google you’ll notice the URL never changes, in fact if you hit “refresh” on the browser any changes you made to the page disappear.

This all in mind there are area’s of calcylator where the page is un-necessarily redrawn; The recently implemented new feature allows you to filter your mini-statement, the filters allow you to view only selling / sold or unsold items, now I could have implemented it traditionally or with ajax. The picture on this post highlights the new tool bar & you’ll notice it is massively quick !!!!! To be honest I’m gonna stop there (for now), implementing this ajax code has totally messed up the neatness of what I have written, but I think more ajax could fit in nicely (not too much tho’), but before I put any more in I’m going to make sure the underlying code is ready for it !!!!

coComment – clear conversation in the blogosphere

coComment – clear conversation in the blogosphere
Tired of commenting and LOSING TRACK of your discussions?

I don’t comment a lot on other peoples blogs, the main reason being that I don’t have the time to go back and see what someone else said after me, which then kinda makes the comment pointless. I’ve come across this co-comment thingy and this am I received my account invitation.

The product seems quite cool, tiz the usual ajax interface all new blogging tools, and it’s like a dashboard of any comments you made, and the content they appeared in, so yes, it’s very easy to see what happened after you dropped your pearl of wisdom ;)

h4x0r (Hacker) / The Matrix Theme for WordPress

My h4x0r Theme

I thought I’d try something different ;)

I’ve been playing with wordpress for nearly a year now, and thought it’d be cool to make a publicly available theme, I wasn’t sure on what to do so I thought I’d start with a simple pallet. My theme is a black on green code looking theme, you know the hacker site style; to make it more interesting I added some matrix references, and silly bits of php code.

The theme has been tested on wp 1.5 & 2.01 (including a blank one as requested on the codex) , there is a screenshot and I’ve also installed a theme switcher so you can demo it :D

h4x0r is available for download here, please let me know your thoughts.
